Avocados are mostly used in salads, on sandwiches, in guacamole or as a very good substitute for meat (vegetarians love it… with good reason). But most people never think about using it to make avocado ice cream!
When you first hear about it, making ice cream might seem a little bit strange but it’s surprisingly rich and creamy… and it’s super easy to make, provided you have the right ingredients and your trusty ice cream maker.
Before I started on my own avocado ice cream, I did a quick search to see if there are any special benefits to eating avocado as I didn’t know a lot about it.
Aside from the fact that there are more than a whopping 80 varieties (most common one is the Hass avocado), the most interesting tidbit I found was that avocados are actually very good for pregnant women, they contain a vitamin called folate which reduces the risk of birth defects!
Avocados also contain oleic acid that can lower your cholesterol levels and weirdly activates the part of your brain that makes you feel full, forcing you to eat a little bit less (weight loss tip?). With all those benefits, I think we have enough reasons now to start creating our own ice cream.
Fun fact: Avocados were known by the Aztecs as ‘the fertility fruit’
Avocado Ice Cream: How To
Below you’ll find a very easy recipe to make your own delicious avocado ice cream. If you have some avocado left and don’t want to waste it, you can reduce oxidation (the browning) by sprinkling some lemon juice on the exposed flesh, putting it in a plastic bag and place it in the refrigerator. That way it’ll preserve longer.
- 3 medium ripe avocados
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 cups whole milk
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lime juice
- Pinch of salt
Slice open the avocados, remove the pits, and scoop out the flesh. Put the avocados in a blender. Add the milk, heavy cream, lime juice, sugar and salt. Blend until smooth. Then freeze in your ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s instructions.
When you’ve created your first batch you’ll notice that the ice cream is a bit softer than other flavors, so if you prefer your ice cream to be a bit more solid, put it in the freezer for a couple of hours.
Yep, it’s that easy, now you can make your own ice cream and amaze your friends and family as most people don’t even know ice cream actually exists.
